Introduction To Plant Propagation

This course will provide the student an overview on plant propagation. Included will be seed/sexual propagation and asexual propagation (cuttings, divisions, air layers, etc.). This course will provided both a lecture of the various techniques as well as hands on practical exercises. This should make possible, for the student, both small scale (home owner) and large scale nursery enterprises . Course will be conducted at Ho'oulu 104 and Greenhouse facilities.

The ABC's of Bees: Basic Beekeeping Part C

Part C, construction of hives, assembling woodenware/equipment. This is the third in a series four, 5 hour, non credit courses (A, B, C and D) to provide the student introductory information on keeping bees in Hawaii. In Part C. Students will learn to build hives from locally obtained materials. Students will also learn to assemble woodenware/equipment that can not be locally sourced from hardware stores.

The ABC's of Bees: Basic Beekeeping Part D

The answer to: How do you get bees? Of course you could buy a hive @ about $200+ if you can find someone selling. This class will look at the factors affecting honey bees in the spring-summer months of the year and what will cause a hive to swarm. How to collect a swarm will be covered as well as attracting swarms. If Time permits situation allows we will collect swarm, service swarm traps, or transfer swarm to hive. Students should have had ABC's of Beekeeping A, B and C or AG162 Introductory Beekeeping.

What is Bugging you? Home Garden Pest Control Overview

This course is geared to the home gardener, just starting out, with questions regarding insect pest identification. This course will cover tools/resources for quick identification of the primary insect pests that affect the various crops or ornamental plants that people grow here in Hawaii. This course will also identify beneficial insects and their roles in mitigating insect pest problems. Course will include lecture, demonstrations, and walk about to introduce students to the common pests in the landscape. Time in class will include work with microscopes to observe and assist in identification. Course will also include some information regarding pesticide use, pesticide label interpretation, and pesticide safety.

This class is a continuation of learning basic sewing skills ENR6069. To enroll in this class students should have taken Beginners Sewing Level I class or have the basic knowledge and skills for operating a domestic sewing machine. In this class you will learn to sew two accessories, a zipper pouch and Japanese knot bag. Students will also learn to sew a  pajama pants with elastic from a sewing pattern and learn basic hemming techniques.The instructor will provide required supply list before the first day of class.

Students are encouraged to use own sewing machines. However, we do have limited sewing machines available for students to use on a first come first served basis.

This section is a continuation of Section 1 of College Chorus. Building on the fundamentals, this course delves further into rehearsal techniques and choral repertoire. Participants will refine their vocal skills and explore complex musical concepts. The focus will be on effective rehearsal strategies, dynamic interpretation, and enhancing group cohesion. This eight-week session will prepare participants for a more polished and sophisticated performance.

Do you enjoy crafting and are looking to start a new hobby? We’re offering a 6 week crochet course, every Saturday from 10am- 12pm for beginners. Students will learn about crochet needles/sizes, beginner patterns/ stitches, and learn to create interesting/ memorable items as keepsakes and/or gifts- while also learning a new creative skill.

Introduction to Garment Alterations teaches students basic hand stitching methods as well as threading and using a sewing machine and its settings. Students will also learn skills such as hemming dresses/pants/skirts, creative solutions to customize garment design, fit, tapering, and beginner seamstress techniques.

Intro to Swimwear

Learn to sew women’s swimwear using reversible sewing techniques with a serger sewing machine. Students will learn about spandex stretch fabric, how to follow and create swimwear patterns, sizing, sewing with a serger as well as single needle sewing machines, and will complete multiple swimwear pieces.

This class will explore and develop the use of linoleum plates in printmaking. Students will design, carve, and print fine art images by hand and on a printing press.

Navigating Your Digital Camera

You've got a DSLR camera, now what? This hands-on workshop with Aubrey Hord, Cr.Photog.CPP, covers the basics of how to navigate your camera's settings and how to get started shooting with the manual setting to create the photographs you envision. Students will learn about ISO, shutter speed, and aperture to create the correct exposure-along with focus, metering white balance, lens choice, filters, and more.

Beginner's Sewing Class

Come learn a new skill that will last you a lifetime! Join us in the Fashion Tech Lab at Maui College for fun-filled learn-to-sew classes. Participants will not only learn the basics of sewing, but also how to thread and operate their personal sewing machines, troubleshoot basic problems, measure the body for fit, fabric selection and how to read a commercial sewing pattern. Classes are offered by age groups: Tweens - ages 8 - 12 years of age, Teens - ages 13 - 18 years of age, and Adults - 19+ years of age.

Hand Embroidery and Mending

Hand Embroidery and Visible Mending

Students will learn basic hand embroidery stitches such as the satin, chain and lazy daisy stiches. In addition, students will learn a few visible mending techniques. The combination of embroidery and mending techniques are creative ways to embellish, repair and bring new life to old clothes and turn into wearable art.

Surface Design and Pattern in Textile

Are there ideas you have always wanted to develop but don't know how? Do you think some fabric patterns can be drab? Have you ever wanted to create your own colorful clothing fabric patterns? Surface Design and Pattern is any type of artwork (pattern, illustration, hand lettering, etc.) made by a designer that is intended to be applied to a surface to enhance its visual appearance and/or functionality. In this class, you will learn to create basic designs and patterns to start publishing textiles or artwork. Your instructor will take you through the process of using a simple iPad app and guide you to add drawings, color, texture, and transition elements for your own unique patterns.  Note: Designs will be conducted on your required personal Apple iPad using the Apple Pen with the Procreate app.

Tai Chi (Yang Style): Meditation and Martial Arts

It's known by many names but whether you are just starting to explore Tai Chi, Qigong, or Tai Qi, or have been practicing for years, this course has no requirements nor necessary equipment. All are welcome. As people all over the world have discovered, Tai Chi is a powerful and natural way to address health conditions, stimulate inner healing, and live a happy, healthy life. Sifu Dan Takamura and his Instructors will be leading our Martial Arts classes. We offer students 90-minute sessions (on Wednesdays and Saturdays starting 2024). Classes will be held in LAU226 and/or outdoors on our beautiful UHMC Quad. Please bring water and a towel if necessary, shoes and comfortable clothes are recommended.

Tao Style Kung Fu for Self-Defense

Sifu Dan Takamura offers Taichi classes for health and wellness and Kung Fu classes for Self-defense while learning internal and external power for cardio and fitness. Part of the Maui Chinese Martial Academy for over 25 years, he has done Lion Dances, Kung Fu, and Tai Chi performances.  Tao style was known for its mystical and spiritual side of Kung Fu. Instructors will teach you how to utilize your internal and external strengths and increase your spiritual power. Individuals will have the opportunity to learn a one-of-a-kind martial art. Beginners will learn eight steps, six blocks, and basic five elemental sets and as they improve they will learn other more advanced forms. All students must complete a UHMC Liability Waiver Form before partaking in our fitness classes. Please bring water and a towel if necessary, comfortable clothing and shoes are recommended

Zumba Fitness

Zumba Fitness Dance fitness classes that are fun, energetic, and make you feel amazing. Each Zumba class is designed to bring people together to sweat it on. Once the Latin and World rhythms take over, you'll see why Zumba Fitness classes are often called exercise in disguise. A total workout, combining all elements of fitness – cardio, muscle conditioning, balance and flexibility, boosted energy and a serious dose of awesome each time you leave class. Students adjust to their own level of comfort and fitness. MFIC Food Business Start Up

Transform your food idea into a sellable product. This course will guide you through developing a food prototype, finding your first customers, and setting achievable business goals. Key topics include an introduction to food entrepreneurship, developing your business idea, creating a food prototype, and laying the foundation for future growth.

This is an online, self-paced course. This course includes an optional in-person tour of the MFIC commercial kitchen at Maui College to start thinking about the equipment needed for producing at scale. This course also includes 5 hours of MFIC kitchen facility time.

Learn how to obtain: Food handlers certification and Food Business license. Learn product development for food manufacturing, ingredient sourcing, costing, branding their products and how to manage the intricacies of a small supply chain, building alliances to lower costs, and valuable best practices for growing a business. Convert a basic recipe into a manufacturing formula. Includes hands-on time in the MFIC Test Kitchen.
